Marker Comps - Bulalacao

Here's another set of marker comps for my debut into the world of illustrations. This is one of my favorite monsters of all time - the filipino Bulalacao. They're basically the Philppines way of explaining shooting stars. The shooting stars with tails are the females with their long hair and, obviously, the tailless ones are the males with their short hair. Enjoy!!

Marker Comps - Dragon

Here are some more marker comps for the upcoming book on mythological creatures. The second creature I chose to illustrate was your typical European dragon. I'm not too pleased with the actual drawing but I do like the a couple of these colored panels. Can you guess which ones? Enjoy and be sure to come back for more updates!

Marker Comps - Enenra

I'm currently working on 5 illustrations for a collaborative book that will be based on mythological creatures from around the world. Here are two pages of marker comps on the japanese creature called the enenra. It is a smoke creature that appears in the form of a woman and only to those who are pure of heart. Look Ma! I'm on TV!!

I got to design myself to be one of the incidentals in Ben 10: Ultimate Alien. Here's a screengrab of me sitting behind Ben, Kevin, and Gwen at a tennis match in the episode "Duped".

Here is the model sheet of the design I did that was colored by our color stylist Chris Hooten. They changed my hoodie color to red from black so that the character wouldn't turn into an amorphous blob.

This was the original design I did of myself. I tried adding the flame logo to my clothes because I'm a HUGE Calgary Flames fan and I'm always wearing their merchandise. Glen wanted me to get rid of the logo to make sure no one sued the studio. :(

My Venture Into Sculpting

I've been wanting to try something new for awhile and a friend at work inspired me to try my hand at sculpting. He used to sculpt toys and maquettes and was gracious enough to lend me some tools so that I could show the world that I should probably stick to pencil and paper. I really hope I can put time aside every day to work on this. I found it to be quite cathartic and enjoyable. Two points to anyone (besides my brothers) who can correctly guess what I have begun to sculpt. Hint: #104.

A Long Awaited Jolina Update

Well, I finally got around to finishing a personal design of mine. Her name is Jolina and she's a character for a story I got rolling around in my head. She's a Bulalacao from Filipino mythology which is their explanation of a shooting star. I still might have to tweak a few things here or there but it's basically done. I am excited!!

I'm not only excited that I finished her design but I have also found someone to sculpt her into a maquette for me. His name is Seth Astle and I was quite impressed with the photos he sent me of previous sculptures he's done. When I find the address to his blog I'll be sure to post it. I'm going to continue doing things with this new design so keep an eye out! Also, keep coming back for periodic updates and photos of the sculpting process.

A Few Sketches

Another Girl

This was done on a sheet of paper with other sketches and I ran out of room on both the top and bottom of the picture. Believe it or not, over the last few weeks I've been focusing on hands and feet more so I was a little disappointed I didn't have room to draw her feet in this picture. In real life, I find feet overly disgusting and hardly ever nice to look at, but I have had a blast drawing them and hope I get better at it soon!

Quick Jolina Before Bed

Boy was today busy!! I'm glad that despite just how crazy it was I still made time to draw and to post. That is hopefully a good sign of a step in the right direction. I really hope I can stay dedicated and I really hope that the dedication and practice will yield the results I'm seeking.

I have felt for the last few months that I do not draw enough for myself and the progress of my art has been stagnant. So, I started a regime last week and am proud I've stuck with it for two weeks now (hence the regular posts). My morning sketching went good enough today for me to show you all what I do to start out my day.

First, I do a page (front and back) of 45 second gestures from the posemaniacs website.

Then, I do a face. Sometimes I try to do a charactiture but today I felt like doing a portrait.

Next, I do a study of a figure. Today I was feeling ambitious and included some drapery. I kinda like this drawing today although I'm not thrilled with how the drapery did come out. I also take time with these studies to practice my inking and sometimes some shading.

Lastly, I draw a cartoon character. John K, over on his blog, talks about how doing this really helps you to grow as an artist so I am putting him to the test. I try to focus on construction and once again, I take this chance to try and better my clean line (which you can see needs a lot of work). I try to pick cartoons from all over the spectrum but I do like Looney Tunes a lot. Today's was Goliath.

After I'm done with this I begin work on my freelance designs for Ben 10: Alien Force. Yes, it does take a few hours to do all this each morning but that's why I wake up so early. Nothing good ever comes without sacrifice and effort. Well, here's a group of bad drawings out of the way meaning I'm that much closer to getting rid of my 100,000 and becoming "good" :)
