Monster Mythos FOR SALE!!!!!!!!!

Several months ago I took part in an effort to produce "Monster Mythos: A Folklore Bestiary". It's a book where 19 artists illustrated 50 monsters from around the world for your viewing pleasure. Below are snippets from three of the five illustrations that I did. The books are finally available for purchase on this blog so come and get 'em! If you want it personalized then be sure to put the name of the lucky recipient in the "DEDICATED TO" box.

The first 50 buyers to purchase a book from me will also get this signed and numbered digital print. An 8.5"x11" illustration of a Filipina seeing her first Bulalacao. Act fast before supplies run out!!

Be sure to check out the previous post that talks about all those whose art inspired and helped me finish this project. I feel as though my talents are insufficient and I could not have done it without them.

Reference Art

While I worked on the "Monster Mythos" book, I looked at and used a lot of art by a lot of artists to help me out. From Ben Caldwell to N.C. Wyeth, from Eric Canete to Alex Toth, and from Mary Blair to countless artists I'm unfamiliar with but was fortunate to find their art on the internet. Below are reference pages I made that I used to help inspire and create my illustrations. I could not have done it without them.  I hope one day I can be as good as them in my own right. For now, I want to thank all the artists out their who do inspire me and whose art helped me finish the book and continues to inspire me to become better. Cheers!

Looking at these again I'm noticing how much of this stuff I blatantly ripped off. Jeez!! Talk about unoriginal! Maybe next time I do something I'll do something original...

Marker Comps - Bulalacao

Here's another set of marker comps for my debut into the world of illustrations. This is one of my favorite monsters of all time - the filipino Bulalacao. They're basically the Philppines way of explaining shooting stars. The shooting stars with tails are the females with their long hair and, obviously, the tailless ones are the males with their short hair. Enjoy!!

Marker Comps - Dragon

Here are some more marker comps for the upcoming book on mythological creatures. The second creature I chose to illustrate was your typical European dragon. I'm not too pleased with the actual drawing but I do like the a couple of these colored panels. Can you guess which ones? Enjoy and be sure to come back for more updates!

Marker Comps - Enenra

I'm currently working on 5 illustrations for a collaborative book that will be based on mythological creatures from around the world. Here are two pages of marker comps on the japanese creature called the enenra. It is a smoke creature that appears in the form of a woman and only to those who are pure of heart. Enjoy and stay tuned for more!!!

Look Ma! I'm on TV!!

I got to design myself to be one of the incidentals in Ben 10: Ultimate Alien. Here's a screengrab of me sitting behind Ben, Kevin, and Gwen at a tennis match in the episode "Duped".

Here is the model sheet of the design I did that was colored by our color stylist Chris Hooten. They changed my hoodie color to red from black so that the character wouldn't turn into an amorphous blob.

This was the original design I did of myself. I tried adding the flame logo to my clothes because I'm a HUGE Calgary Flames fan and I'm always wearing their merchandise. Glen wanted me to get rid of the logo to make sure no one sued the studio. :(

Enjoy!! Be sure to look for me in future episodes. I'm usually mixed into a large crowd but my red hoodie makes me stand out quite a bit :)

My Venture Into Sculpting

I've been wanting to try something new for awhile and a friend at work inspired me to try my hand at sculpting. He used to sculpt toys and maquettes and was gracious enough to lend me some tools so that I could show the world that I should probably stick to pencil and paper. I really hope I can put time aside every day to work on this. I found it to be quite cathartic and enjoyable. Two points to anyone (besides my brothers) who can correctly guess what I have begun to sculpt. Hint: #104.

Ruff Design

Here are some rough designs for a project I'm working on with my little brother Bryce. I still gotta figure some things out on her design but I'm liking it so far. I really like the one in the middle :)

Sculpture Update #1

Here's the first batch of photos from Seth. I think it's pretty fun to see how things are "shaping up". Get it?! Man, I should've been a comedian. Anyways, he's got me pretty excited about this. You can check out his blog HERE.

Thanks for dropping by and enjoy!!

Research

I'm designing some school kids and want to draw more than just the 3/4 front. So, here's a little something I did while roughing the design out.

A Long Awaited Jolina Update

Well, I finally got around to finishing a personal design of mine. Her name is Jolina and she's a character for a story I got rolling around in my head. She's a Bulalacao from Filipino mythology which is their explanation of a shooting star. I still might have to tweak a few things here or there but it's basically done. I am excited!!

I'm not only excited that I finished her design but I have also found someone to sculpt her into a maquette for me. His name is Seth Astle and I was quite impressed with the photos he sent me of previous sculptures he's done. When I find the address to his blog I'll be sure to post it. I'm going to continue doing things with this new design so keep an eye out! Also, keep coming back for periodic updates and photos of the sculpting process.
Enjoy!!
